Hesham al-Bastawisi is the current vice president of the Court of Cassation – one of the highest judicial bodies in the country – and began his presidential campaign in March 2011. He emerged as an outspoken critic of elections during the Mubarak era and condemned the intimidation of judges by the Mubarak regime. His platform focuses on improvements to education, addressing the problems present in Upper Egypt, and strengthening the state’s democratic institutions. He is supported by members of the April 6 Movement.
