Preliminary Election Results

Voter Turnout

On December 5, Egypt’s High Electoral Commission (HEC) announced that the turnout figure for the first round of the first stage of the People’s Assembly elections was 52 percent. The official turnout during the first round of the second stage was 67 percent. The People’s Assembly elections in Egypt are taking place in three stages, each with two rounds.

Overall Votes

Stage 1: The HEC said that the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) won 36.6 percent of the 9.7 million valid ballots cast for party lists. The FJP list also includes other members of the Democratic Alliance—such as al-Geel and al-Ghad al-Jedid. Al-Nour followed with 24.4 percent. The Egyptian Bloc came third with 13.4 percent, followed by al-Wafd with 7.1 percent and al-Wasat with 4.3 percent of the vote. The Revolution Continues Alliance won 3.5 percent. These numbers will change because of the December 5 cancellation of the election results in the al-Sahel district.

Stage 2: Egypt’s HEC released semiofficial figures for the second stage of the Egyptian elections that indicate that the FJP won 36 percent of the party-list vote in the second round, while al-Nour followed with 28 percent. The unofficial results also showed that al-Wafd earned 22 percent of the vote. These results do not include the votes for the party-list races in Beheira (district #2), Sohag (district #2), and Menoufiya (district #1). There, the party-list election was postponed to December 21 and 22 because some parties were not included on the districts’ ballot sheets and the ballots had to be reprinted.
